Cannot get adf.ly working…

ive had bit.ly and now have.goo.gl running but i would really like to get adf.ly working, ive got my id and api key and as i say %SURL% is set because goo.gl works.
also it seems that the adf.ly urls are built because i can see them on adf.ly manager but the connection times out when i try to post to anything with the surl tag as stumble upon still posts fine
as do twitter and facebook when using another provider
any ideas ?
is this a bug or mebbe a paid only service (which it doesnt seem to be)
if this bug gets squished im thinking of buying the pro edition
